How does a washing machine actually work? What is the difference between the individual washing programs? And what steps does the washing machine actually perform in a washing program?
Basic operation of the washing machine
When a laundry is put into a washing machine no matter a non moving or a portable one a washing program will start and water first runs into the drum and wets the laundry. The Laundry absorbs detergent much more better when wet and is easier to clean.
Then the washing is soaked to better dissolve impurities. After soaking, a pre-wash can be selected to remove any coarse dirt (sand, dust) from the laundry, if necessary. However, depending on the choice of washing program, it can also be dispensed with.
Then the main wash follows. The laundry is mixed with washing liquor and pressed by the movements of the machine repeatedly into the washing liquor, transported high and then thrown back. This will push the dirt out of the laundry.
When rinsing then the residues of the wash are rinsed out in several rinses again, while also the dissolved dirt is pumped from the clothes with. In the last rinse is rinsed once again with softener.
Thereafter, the laundry is spun at different speeds to squeeze out the excess water. The residual moisture of the laundry is reduced to about half.
Washing programs
By selecting the wash program, individual steps can be modified or omitted. For this purpose, the temperature of the wash liquor is adjusted. Common temperatures are:

for cooking linen = 194° F (95° C)

Note! Machine washing always means wear for laundry. Very delicate textiles should therefore only be washed carefully by hand.
